Chargers re-sign Khalil Mack to 1-year, $18 million deal

For at least another season, star pass rusher Khalil Mack will avoid ever hitting the free agent market.

On Monday morning, the Chargers and Mack have reportedly agreed to a new one-year, $18 million contract that will keep him in Los Angeles for one more season. Mack was at the top of the offseason priority list for both Jim Harbaugh and general manager Joe Hortiz and thankfully the deal gets done a little over 48 hours prior to the start of the new league year.

This past season, Mack’s sack and tackle for loss numbers took a bit of a step back, but a lot of that could be attributed to the defensive team success of the Chargers as a whole. The Chargers were one of the league’s best scoring defenses and kept opponents from recording first downs at a relatively high clip. By season’s end, Mack had played just 617 snaps on defense in 16 games, the lowest by far of any season outside of his seven-game 2021 campaign cut short by injury.

Still, he totaled six sacks and six tackles for loss while being an immensely impactful player in both the run and the pass. He also recorded nine pass breakups, second most of his career behind the 10 he put up in 2023.

Since joining the Chargers prior to the 2022 season, Mack has totaled 163 tackles, 31 sacks, 39 tackles for loss, 21 pass breakups, nine forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries en route to being name to the Pro Bowl in each season.

He’ll now run it back one more time with an edge rusher group that currently includes three-year standout Tuli Tuipulotu and veteran Bud Dupree.
