With the 2025 season all but over, I wanted to take a long, hard look at what pieces this roster has we can build around for the future.
As you all know around this time of year, when Washington is out of playoff contention (something we all should be very familiar with), focus starts to shift to the NFL Draft. The building blocks are something to monitor as we begin to evaluate draft prospects and try to match value at our draft position with positional need.
Below are who I view as building blocks on this team moving forward. I have also added in some good young role-players we have, some question marks for the future and players I’d rather not see back.
BUILDING BLOCKS:
QB:
- Jayden Daniels: Yes, he’s struggled a lot this season with both injuries and inconsistencies, but make NO mistake about it – He’s the future of the franchise!
RB:
- Jacory “Bill” Croskey-Merritt: Bill is a dynamic running back who is a threat to take it to the house on any play. He does, however, need to develop more patience when hitting the hole and improve his blocking. I feel he has the skillset the team can build around for the future. An offseason in the weight room will do him wonders.
WR:
- Treylon Burks: This one is going to surprise a LOT of people. I do not see Terry as a building block for the future. His deal really only keeps him here through 2026 anyways, so I have him here for just one more season. I know Burks is relatively unproven, but from the short time we’ve seen him here, he’s shown he can get open and literally catches EVERYTHING. Add a dynamic deep threat opposite him and I think he can thrive in the middle of the field and in the redzone.
TE: NONE
OL:
- Laremy Tunsil: Yes, even at age 31, Tunsil is someone we NEED to extend this offseason. A guy with his athleticism can play at a high level for another 4-5 years, and we can continue building around him.
- Josh Conerly: The rookie has had some tough sledding this year, but he’s started to play a lot better over the second half of the season. He has the athletic profile and mental makeup to become a top five right tackle in the league.
- Sam Cosmi: Cosmi had to shake off some rust after returning from a knee injury, but it didn’t take long for him to regain his dominate form. He’s playing at an extremely high level right now and at just 26 years old, he’ll be in his prime for the next 4-5 years.
DL: NONE
LB:
- Jordan Magee: Magee has shown me enough to make me believe we have something here with him. He may be better suited as a WILL (not as Bobby Wagner’s replacement), but as a run-and-hit linebacker,...
