PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin revealed on Tuesday that linebacker Cole Holcomb (illness) and safety Jabrill Peppers (quad) will be limited to start the week ahead of Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Holcomb and Peppers have been out for the last two games.
Tomlin is ‘”optimistic” about left guard Isaac Seumalo being able to return. Seumalo was out for Sunday night’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers due to a pectoral injury.
Wide receiver Scotty Miller, who missed the last three games with a broken finger, has been cleared to practice.
Cornerback Darius Slay remains in the concussion protocol. Slay suffered the concussion in the second quarter of Sunday night’s game against the Chargers.
Slay got injured on a friendly fire incident when making a tackle on Chargers running back Kimani Vidal. Safeties Kyle Duggar and Jalen Ramsey collided into Slay’s helmet.
Slay went out of the blue medical tent and walked to the Steelers locker room with the NFL red-hat independent neurological consultant.
James Pierre replaced Slay at the left cornerback position. Pierre made an instant impact by slamming Chargers wide receiver Derius Davis.
Seumalo first suffered the pectoral injury in Week 9 against the Green Bay Packers. He returned to that game once before being eventually ruled out. Last week, he practiced only on Friday and in a limited fashion, but was able to start the game against the Indianapolis Colts. He played the first half before being ruled out for the rest of the game in the second half.
Each time Seumalo has missed time this season, he’s been replaced by third-year backup Spencer Anderson. Veteran Andrus Peat started at left guard instead, however, and Anderson served as the sixth offensive lineman in the jumbo package. Anderson then started at left guard on the following drive and the rest of the game.
It was first time this season the Steelers started anyone other than their five first-team offensive linemen.
