Ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the NFL’s rushing leader, the Pittsburgh Steelers added some ground reinforcements themselves, elevating tailbacks Trey Sermon and Lew Nichols from the practice squad to the active/inactive roster on Saturday.

Sermon, a third-round draft pick in 2021, has played in two games for the Steelers this season, returning two kickoffs for 51 yards. Being that he was brought up for the team’s games against the New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings, this is the last time Mike Tomlin’s team can elevate him this regular season. If they want to have him available for another game, the Steelers will have to sign him to the 53-man roster.

Nichols, who signed with the Steelers during training camp, has yet to make his NFL debut. He paced the nation with 1,710 rushing yards while at Central Michigan in 2021. During the same campaign, he was the Mid-American Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year.

Sermon has much more NFL experience, playing in 44 games during stops with the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts. Last season with the Colts, he carried the ball 56 times for 159 yards and two touchdowns.

While playing against the Steelers with that same team in 2023, he rumbled for 88 yards on 17 totes.

On the other side, Jonathan Taylor leads the NFL with 850 rushing yards.
