At the 2026 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams surprised many of their fans by selecting quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall selection despite already having veteran Matthew Stafford at the starting position.

Many were surprised by their choice to take a player who is more slated to start with them in the future, rather than a player who could help maximize their current Super Bowl window. However, it doesn’t appear as though any additional quarterbacks will be making their way to the club any time soon.

However, according to Rams beat writer Adam Grosbard, the current plan is not to have competition for Simpson at the backup position behind Stafford.

“Sean McVay said the Rams have not to this point discussed adding a veteran to the quarterback room ahead of training camp,” Grosbard wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Meanwhile, Stafford is already enjoying his relationship with Simpson, saying that he’s already taking on the role of mentor.

“I’m there with him in the meeting room, on the practice field, trying to share as much knowledge as I can,” Stafford said via Ramblin’ Fan. “I was a big fan of Ty when he played at Alabama. I sent him a message right after the draft saying, ‘I really enjoyed watching you play. You were just wearing the wrong jersey, you weren’t a ‘Dog.'”

“He’s a very talented kid,” Stafford continued. “I’ll do everything I can to get this team ready to play and win, but at the same time, I want to share some of the knowledge I’ve gained throughout my career. I wouldn’t be in this chair talking to you all today, after a really good season, if I hadn’t had people who helped me along the way, too. So, I’m happy to do it.”
