After three successful seasons as the San Francisco 49ers’ quarterbacks coach, Brian Griese has decided to leave the organization.
According to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle, Brian Griese has resigned from his position as the QBs coach under Kyle Shanahan. The former NFL quarterback was an analyst at ESPN from 2009 to 2022 before trying his hand at coaching.
Per Branch, 49ers general manager John Lynch said at the NFL Combine that Griese’s exit was simply a “family decision.” Branch added that Griese was vocal about finding it hard to be away from his wife and kids in Denver while he coached in San Francisco.
Mick Lombardi, a 49ers offensive assistant under coach Shanahan in 2024, was named the team’s new quarterbacks coach. The 49ers also named Klay Kubiak their new offensive coordinator.
Klay is the brother of Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and the father of former Houston Texans and Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak.

Brian Griese’s tenure as the 49ers’ quarterbacks coach was successful to the point where he could probably get back into coaching down the road if he wanted. Griese helped 2022 “Mr. Irrelevant” Brock Purdy grow into a star after Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo suffered season-ending injuries in the midst of Purdy’s rookie year.
Purdy led the 49ers to consecutive NFC Championship Game appearances in 2022 and 2023 and got them to overtime of Super Bowl 58, where they narrowly fell to the Kansas City Chiefs.
