The New England Patriots need a serious injection of talent to the roster and one way to do so is through the trade market.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport on Wednesday, the Green Bay Packers had trade conversations involving Jaire Alexander and “are open to moving him for the right price.” The star cornerback has two years and $37 million left on his contract.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst told reporters, “We’ll see,” when asked if Alexander would be on the team next season.

“We’re working through that. He certainly could be. But we’ll work through that as we go,” Gutekunst told reporters, per Rapoport.

Head coach Mike Vrabel made it clear he wanted to rebuild the Patriots through the trenches. But could you imagine a cornerback duo of Christian Gonzalez and Alexander? And what if New England could combine that duo with Travis Hunter? Of course, you’d take that.

All of this would depend on what “the right price” means. The Washington Commanders traded a 2025 fifth-round pick for Marson Lattimore before last year’s NFL trade deadline. The Baltimore Ravens only dealt a 2026 seventh-round pick for Tre’Davious White and a 2027 seventh-round pick last year.

That’s not an expensive price. However, Green Bay still might try to strike a hard bargain for one of its cornerstone defensive players.

If the cost of Alexander is a late-round pick, that’s worth the investment. The 28-year-old only played seven games in the last two seasons. But with Gonzalez as the No. 1 cornerback, a smaller workload could benefit the veteran entering his eighth season.

The Patriots need to explore all avenues to improve their roster, and it would be foolish of them to not at least make a call for Alexander.
