Acme Packing Company
Following the loss of defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt, who had previously started for the Green Bay Packers in the under tackle position, the Packers signed two defensive tackles last week: Jordon Riley and Quinton Bohanna. Both Riley, poached from the New York Giants’ practice squad, and Bohanna, claimed on waivers via the Seattle Seahawks, are nose tackle-type bodies, which forced Nazir Stackhouse to be a healthy scratch for the first time in his NFL career on Sunday.
As it stands right now, here’s Green Bay’s defensive tackle outlook on the 53-man roster:
As you can tell, there’s a lot more nose tackle bodies on the roster than under tackle, which is odd considering the additions of Riley and Bohanna came after the team lost an under tackle in Wyatt.
Usually, the Packers work out players on Tuesdays, a day off for Green Bay — and most teams around the league with Sunday games. Instead, the Packers went out of their way to work out a defensive tackle today, which is worth noting with the current state of the roster.
Cowart is an under tackle who has played 51 games in the NFL and has made 21 starts. Most recently, he started seven games for the Chicago Bears in 2024. The 29-year-old was originally drafted in 2019 in the fifth round out of Maryland, following a transfer from Auburn, where he signed as the country’s number one overall recruit in the 2025 class.
Originally beginning his NFL career as a New England Patriot, he’s also spent time with the Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Texans, Miami Dolphins, Bears and New York Jets. His most recent stop was with the Jets, where he was placed on the injured reserve in August at the cutdown deadline. He was waived from the injured reserve on December 2nd, meaning he’s only been able to pick up over the last week or so.
The work-out designation here, rather than a visit designation, is important. This means that Cowart was able to do on-field work for Green Bay on his trip. This is Cowart’s first stop since being waived by the Jets.
Beyond just Cowart, the Packers also worked out offensive lineman Sataoa Laumea today. He started his NFL career as a sixth-round pick out of Utah in 2024, landing with the Seattle Seahawks. As a rookie, he made six starts and played 358 total offensive snaps.
Under a new offensive staff, though, Laumea wasn’t able to make the Seahawks’ 53-man roster this summer and was re-signed to the practice squad, only to be quickly released. He was signed by the New Orleans Saints’ practice squad early on in the 2025 season, but only lasted about a month.
Following his release from the Saints, the Miami Dolphins worked him out about a month ago.
