The Packers are shopping cornerback Jaire Alexander, will the Rams pick up the phone?
The Green Bay Packers don’t want to pay Jaire Alexander what he’s owed in 2025 and they’re hoping a team will take his contract while giving them something in return. Will the Los Angeles Rams be the team that bites or should Les Snead just wait until Alexander is released to open the bidding?
Could the Packers and Rams even work out a swap of injury prone needs by sending Cooper Kupp to Green Bay for Alexander?
A first round pick in 2018, Alexander has had four relatively healthy seasons and three seasons in which he has missed at least 10 games over his career. Though Alexander is considered to be one of the NFL’s best cornerbacks when he’s healthy, he has missed 10 games in each of the past two seasons, so clearly Ian Rapoport’s tweet was written by someone in the Green Bay organization.
Alexander’s contract calls for over $16 million in salary in 2025 and over $18 million in 2026.
The Packers will only save a little under $7 million, whether they trade or release Alexander, so their only incentive to shop the cornerback is to get something in return. Green Bay’s most visible need is at wide receiver and head coach Matt LaFleur has some familiarity with Kupp given his one year as Sean McVay’s offensive coordinator.
But both sides could also just release their respective players and try to sign them in free agency. However, given how unlikely it is to get a good draft pick for either player — if they can get a trade offer at all — the teams may think about skipping the lines and trying to work out a deal between friends.
Would Jaire Alexander be the best possible option for the Rams at cornerback in 2025? Or another missed swing like Tre’Davious White? Tell us what you think of these scenarios in the comments below.
