The Patriots are flush with salary cap space, but they also should take a hard look at the trade market as they try to improve their roster for the 2025 season.
If New England does incorporate that strategy, a highly productive veteran defender might garner a lot of attention from the organization.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Wednesday morning reported the Titans gave Harold Landry III permission to seek a trade. Landry has two years remaining on his current contract with a base salary of $17.5 million in each campaign.
The standout linebacker was one of the highest picks in Mike Vrabel’s first draft as Tennessee’s head coach in 2018. After a quiet start to his NFL tenure, Landry started every single Titans game for three straight seasons (2019-2021) and logged 26 1/2 sacks over that span. He was named a Pro Bowl selection in late January 2022, seven months before he suffered a torn ACL injury that entirely wiped out his fifth NFL season.
But Landry bounced back strong to the tune of a combined 19 1/2 sacks and 141 total tackles over the last two seasons. His sustained productivity could be appealing to the Patriots, whose linebacking corps certainly could use a boost. But for New England, it will need to decide if two seasons of Landry’s services are worth the remaining money he’s owed on top of the capital necessary to facilitate a trade.
The 28-year-old himself might be interested in a trade to the Patriots, though. In addition to reuniting with Vrabel and joining a team on the rise, a deal would allow Landry to return to the New England area, where he played four collegiate seasons with Boston College.
