The Philadelphia Eagles’ tush push has become one of the defining plays of the NFL the last few years. Jalen Hurts and a high-powered offensive line, coupled with a push from behind, has overpowered teams in recent years with the play in short-yardage situations.
There is a push to ban the play, however, with teams citing increased injury risks as one of the reason that they want the play banned. But, a new study released shows that the play doesn’t have any increased injury risk.
It would be easy to understand why people think that a play that looks like this comes with significantly higher injury risk.

That’s a lot of bodies in a very small space. It seems like it would be common for people to get rolled up on during the play. But, that’s not what a new study has to say.
The league’s internal data on the tush push revealed there was a 0% injury rate on what is known as the Tush Push. There’s concern over the “potential” for injury, but to date, there have been no reported injuries from that play.

Here’s NBC Sports Philadelphia with more.
Zero. Zilch. None.
That’s how many injuries were suffered on the Tush Push/Brotherly Shove during the 2024 season, NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent said on Wednesday afternoon at the NFL Combine.
Injury rate was one area brought up by Packers general manager Brian Gutenkust, who on Tuesday admitted he hadn’t really given the play much thought despite working for the team that proposed to ban it.
“I know we’re not very successful against it. I know that,” Gutenkust said. “To be honest about it, I haven’t really put much thought into it. It’s been around for a while. We used it in different fashions with our tight end. Again, I think there will be a lot of discussions about it. I gotta kind of look at the information as far as injury rates, things like that. But we’ll see.”
Based on this information, I find it hard to believe that Green Bay’s effort to ban the play will succeed. The injury argument was their best argument, and now that’s gone. It seems like the tush push will be around for the foreseeable future.
