New York Giants Urged to Consider Head Coach From One of NFL’s Worst Teams

Brian Daboll had been on the hot seat as the New York Giants‘ head coach for several seasons. After suffering their fourth consecutive loss despite holding a double-digit lead, Giants ownership decided it was time to pull the plug on coach Daboll. He ends his Giants tenure with an uninspiring 20-40-1 record, with one playoff win.

The Giants have since promoted offensive coordinator Mike Kafka as their interim head coach. He’s viewed as a bit of a rising star who’s already interviewed for multiple NFL head coaching positions. Now he’ll get his chance to prove himself.

Yet, no matter how Kafka’s team responds to the coaching change over the final seven games of the season, the Giants are expected to embark on a search to find the best candidate possible this offseason. Kafka could certainly emerge from that group.

However, former NFL QB turned ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky believes the Giants should consider hiring an existing head coach of another franchise, if he becomes available. Specifically, Orlovsky believes the Giants should try positioning themselves to interview Kevin Stefanski, if the Browns decide to move on from the two-time NFL Coach of the Year after six seasons.

“Well, the No. 1 name that I would pay attention to if I was the Giants is what happens in Cleveland with Kevin Stefanski, Orlovsky said. “If I could hand-pick a guy, it would be Stefanski. He’s an outstanding coach. I understand people in Cleveland are like, ‘This guy can’t coach, but there’s a lot of empirical data that says otherwise.”

A Browns fan heard Orlovsky’s take and bit back on the notion that Stefanski is a good coach. Orlovsky saw the response and carried over his argument to X, where he defended Stefanski for dealing with a less-than-ideal group of quarterbacks and receivers.

"I understad people in Cleveland are like, 'This guy can't coach,' but there' a lot of empirical data that says otherwise."

Ok @danorlovsky7 I'll bite. Point me towards all this "empirical data" that says Stefanski is a good coach. https://t.co/CqPmFUZPex

Orlovsky also mentioned former Bears head coach Matt Nagy and Jon Gruden as other candidates that should interest the Giants this offseason. Each of these coaches shares a common theme of working closely with young quarterbacks, which should be the Giants’ priority, to get the most out of Jaxson Dart.
