Kyle Shanahan said the 49ers are being smart with George Kittle, and cited Nick Bosa practicing through injury last week.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided injury updates ahead of Wednesday’s practice.

Nick Bosa (hip) and George Kittle (hamstring) won’t practice. Shanahan said his concern level isn’t too high, as Bosa was able to “get through it” last week.

Shanahan said he expects to have Kittle practicing Thursday. The team wants to be smart with Kittle’s hamstring after it irritated him: “You never know how the week goes, but I feel pretty good about both of them.

Shanahan was not as optimistic regarding punter Mitch Wishnowsky’s status for Sunday:

“I am a little more concerned with that. It bothered him earlier in the year pretty bad, back to training camp. It’s flared up here this last week. That’s why we brought in another guy. Hopefully, it’ll take a turn for the better here, but right now we have some concerns.”

The other guy is Pat O’Donnell. Shanahan cited O’Donnell’s understanding of timing and his being a really good holder as the reasons the Niners signed him.

Running back Christian McCaffrey will be listed as limited, but Shanahan confirmed that’s not why he’s on the injury report. It’s due to regular maintenance, per Shanahan, who answered, “No. Nope,” when asked if whether McCaffrey had a setback.

Cornerback Charvarius Ward is still away from the team, attending to matters far more important than football. Shanahan said, “I think he’s getting close,” and that the team would welcome Ward back once he’s ready.
