Former New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman expressed his belief that Bill Belichick could be a candidate for a new NFL head coaching opening.
“There’s a team down in Chapel Hill playing a little better,” Edelman said Monday on his “Games With Names” podcast. “What if the New York Giants brought in Bill Belichick?”
The Giants parted ways with head coach Brian Daboll on Monday after a 2-8 start to the season. Belichick is currently coaching North Carolina, and if he wants to return to the NFL, New York could be a good fit.
Belichick was New York’s defensive coordinator from 1985 to 1990 under head coach Bill Parcells, helping the Giants win two Super Bowls.
The Giants may not have the strongest team currently, but they possess several pieces that Belichick could mold into a more competitive team. Unfortunately, two of New York’s top offensive talents, wide receiver Malik Nabers and running back Cam Skattebo, are sidelined with season-ending injuries. Still, they should be ready to go at the start of 2026.
Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart has shown he could possibly be one of the next best quarterbacks in the NFL. Belichick would have some offensive pieces to work with, and then he could use his defensive expertise to fix that side of the ball.
