In New York Giants’ Coaching Search, How About Bill Belichick?

By now, you’ve surely heard that the New York Giants need a new head coach. Many would argue they’ve needed one for multiple years, but now that the organization has pulled the plug on Brian Daboll, the Giants have no choice but to consider their options this offseason, so what about Bill Belichick?

While Mike Kafka is getting a well-deserved chance at leading the Giants into battle over the final seven games of the season, he brings no head coaching experience to the table. Meanwhile, Belichick not only has 29 years of seasoning as an NFL head coach, but he’s also won six Super Bowls.

Sure, many will argue that the 73-year-old is simply too old to lead an NFL franchise, but he wouldn’t even be the oldest coach in the league next season, provided that the Las Vegas Raiders hold onto 74-year-old Pete Carroll after a disappointing season.

And yes, Belichick’s lone season as the North Carolina Tar Heels head coach has brought more drama than wins, but to be fair, he’s never led a college football program before, and he’s only in Year One, when many first-year coaches struggle, no matter what program they’re at.

Belichick worked closely with the likes of Lawrence Taylor and Carl Banks, helping the franchise win Super Bowls XXI and XXV. While those victories occurred back in the 1980s, Belichick hasn’t lost any love for the Giants. If there’s one team that an aging coach like Belichick would likely pour his heart and soul into developing a winner, it’s the Giants.

Plus, there’s also already some speculation that Belichick could end up in New York. Right after the Giants dismissed Daboll, Belichick was asked about whether he had any interest in taking over the reins of his old franchise. In a typical Belichick manner, he brushed off any and all questions by saying he’s “Getting ready for Wake Forest.” But he also didn’t shoot down the idea either.

Then there’s Chris Simms from NBC’s Pro Football Talk, who passed along word that Belichick has “influence over someone in the Giants organization,” which may have contributed to the hiring of Joe Judge and even Brian Daboll, both former Belichick disciples with the Patriots.

While we’d imagine Belichick would be extremely excited about the opportunity to coach the Giants, there’s no guarantee that there is a mutual interest. With the Giants surprisingly deciding to retain general manager Joe Schoen, it’s...
