Music City Miracles
The Tennessee Titans won’t officially begin their coaching search until January. Until then, it’ll remain one of the more talked-about and exciting events in the Titans’ upcoming offseason timeline. There isn’t real-time excitement with the Nashville-based club sporting an NFL-worst 1-8 record.
We analyzed Matt LaFleur’s potential candidacy on Monday after reports emerged out of Green Bay that he’s coaching for his job. Kevin Stefanski could be another surprise candidate. Arthur Smith, Mike McCarthy, and Robert Saleh have been mentioned.
Another recurring name that gets constantly mentioned is current Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. Nagy’s ties to the job are fairly straightforward. Titans GM Mike Borgonzi spent a considerable amount of time alongside him in KC, and connections are everything in this league.
Many plugged-in Titans analysts are pointing to Nagy as a likely candidate. A to Z’s Easton Freeze and 104.5 The Zone’s Zach Lyons have constantly referenced him in the Titans’ head coaching search. It would be shocking if Nagy wasn’t at least interviewed in January.
Nagy rose to fame as the Chiefs’ OC in 2016-2017. He took the Chicago Bears‘ head coaching job in 2018 and immediately went 12-4 en route to winning NFL Coach of the Year honors. Nagy never recaptured that success, however, going 8-8 in consecutive seasons (2019-20) before a 6-11 campaign got him fired in 2021.
Nagy’s tenure in Chicago has aged better than real-time analysis indicated. The Bears didn’t improve under his successor Matt Eberflus. The biggest issue with Nagy’s time in Chicago was tying his fate to quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, who was a bust regardless of coaching.
Borgonzi’s history with Nagy could be relevant to the Titans’ coaching search. Perhaps he’s better-suited for success on his second attempt after rejoining Andy Reid in Kansas City. The Titans may prioritize experience after striking out on Brian Callahan, and Nagy could check a lot of boxes as a candidate who would be aligned with Borgonzi.
