ESPN’s Jordan Raanan says trading Stafford to the Giants “seems less likely to happen then happen”

Jordan Raanan of ESPN NFL Nation covering the New York Giants is on the ground at the combine this week and reported:

It’s pretty clear after a couple days in Indianapolis that the Giants top priority at quarterback is Matthew Stafford.

An hour later he clarified that while the Giants may intend to make a move for Stafford, it’s ultimately up to the Los Angeles Rams to make the decision on a trade or potential extension and that means it’s less likely than not Stafford doesn’t end up in New York:

It still seems less likely to happen than happen at this point. But in wait and see mode. All eyes on the Rams and Stafford.

It’s telling that the Giants’ brass is prioritizing a trade for Stafford but is not likely to land the veteran—at least at this point. Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen are in desperation mode. Their jobs are on the line and they need to win in 2025.

There’s no better way to do that than to bring in Stafford and pair him with last year’s rookie phenom Malik Nabers. Still, the motivations of Daboll and Schoen should be in question as to whether they have the long-term best interests of the Giants in mind.

The interest of New York and the Las Vegas Raiders could put the Rams in a position where they are able to drive up the price to acquire Stafford’s services. Tom Brady has spoken to Stafford’s representation about a move a couple hours east.

There has been near-daily news on the Rams and the veteran quarterback so far this offseason. Los Angeles holds the keys to Stafford and the future of the quarterback position. If they ultimately decide to move on, having multiple interested bidders isn’t a bad problem to have.
