Former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Steven Nelson did not hold back on Steelers defensive coordinator Teryl Austin. To say the least, Nelson does not think very highly of Austin as a coach.
“The defensive scheme is ass,” Nelson recently said on TR5NT’s YouTube channel. “The DC needs to get the fuck up out of there. Teryl Austin, he was the DB coach when I was there, I didn’t think he was that great then, but now he’s the DC. It’s an opportunistic defense.”
If the Steelers are not creating a slew of turnovers, it’s a below average defense. They’re certainly not getting the most out of their top players in T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward, Patrick Queen and Alex Highsmith.
The Steelers had no answer for the Buffalo Bills’ rushing attack in Sunday’s embarrassing 26-7 loss.
It was a historic performance by Buffalo, as the Bills’ 249 yards rushing were the most ever for a road team at Acrisure Stadium. The Bills’ 249 yards rushing was the most at Pittsburgh by an opposing team since 1975 (Buffalo – 310 yards on 9/28/75).
The Ravens’ rushing attack will be another daunting task for the Steelers, especially with Lamar Jackson under center. The Steelers allowed the Ravens to rush for 299 yards in last year’s Wild Card round playoff loss.
“The scheme, they’ve been running the same shit every year. There’s been no adjustments,” Nelson said. “That’s why you see motherfuckers running through for 200 yards a game on the highest paid defense. … They’ve been running the same schemes even before Teryl Austin got there. People eventually catch on.”
It’s hard for Nelson to grasp how Austin is still the Steelers defensive coordinator.
“Pittsburgh’s loyal to their coaches. That’s the problem,” Nelson said. “That’s why they got fucking Teryl Austin still there. … Get the DC sorry ass up out of there.”
