Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf was fined $12,172 for poking Green Bay Packers linebacker Quay Walker in the eye in the fourth quarter of Sunday night’s loss, the NFL announced.

Metcalf was called for unnecessary roughness for the act, setting the Steelers up in a third and long situation. It would have been third-and-2 without the penalty, instead it was third-and-15. The Steelers ended up punting.

The Steelers were penalized six times for 65 yards and were a brutal 1 of 10 on third downs. With the Steelers’ defense allowing three straight touchdown drives in the second half, Metcalf’s careless penalty certainly hurt the team.

Aaron Rodgers and company were able to move the ball against Green Bay, but they settled for three field goals in the first half.

“We hurt ourselves with penalties,” quarterback Aaron Rodgers said. “We had opportunities to put ourselves in better situations. [Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith] did a great job of calling plays. We had a couple of busts and some opportunities we didn’t come up with. I missed a throw. We can’t expect Boz to be bailing us out like that every single week.”

Metcalf’s penalty was the biggest of the night. That can’t happen at any moment, but it’s a backbreaker when down 10 in the fourth quarter.

Metcalf has a history of being fined for post-play antics. He’s been fined over $170,000 in his career.

Walker told Emmanuel Acho of Speakeasy that “it took everything in me not to retaliate” to Metcalf’s poke.

Metcalf finished the game with five receptions for 55 yards and one touchdown. On the season, he has 27 receptions for 461 yards and five touchdowns.

The Steelers gave Metcalf a five-year, $150 million deal this offseason after they acquired him via a trade from the Seattle Seahawks.
