Other than the expected move, it was a quiet day for the Browns. Was there a motive for sitting tight?
The Cleveland Browns had a relatively quiet day at the trade deadline after being heavily rumored for weeks. They opted to sit tight with most of the existing roster except for the obvious trade of Za’Darius Smith to the Detroit Lions.
They ended up trading Smith along with a 7th-round pick in exchange for a 2025 5th and 2026 6th-round pick. The move had been rumored for weeks and came as no surprise across the league.
While not a trade, the team also released DT Quinton Jefferson on Tuesday.
We’d have to assume the value for players such as Greg Newsome, Elijah Moore, and others didn’t meet the asking price of general manager Andrew Berry. Newsome will now finish the season with the Browns and be on the books for next year unless they can facilitate a trade in the offseason.
His value may be higher, if they can get him more reps on the outside where he can better demonstrate his skills as a cover corner. Moore can be evaluated further and perhaps sign an affordable extension if he earns it.
Cleveland could also be signaling that they want to give this coaching staff every opportunity to finish strong without any excuses. At 2-7, this staff should be coaching for their jobs moving forward.
Our topic for today’s Dawg Pound Discourse is the following: Did the Browns do enough at the trade deadline?
Did they do enough to get extra draft assets? Was keeping players to support the coaching staff a wise move? Let us know in the comments below.
