Former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel Sr. is never shy to share his opinion. And despite his son Asante Samuel Jr. signing with the Steelers earlier this week, that did not hold him back from ripping quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
“Aaron Rodgers is too old,” Samuel said on his Say What Needs To Be Said podcast. “He doesn’t want to get tackled or hit like he used to back in the day. I think Aaron Rodgers is killing their chances.”
Without a doubt, Rodgers had a bad night at the office in Sunday night’s 25-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Rodgers even put the blame on himself for the loss.
It was by far his worst game of the season, completing 16 of 31 passes (51.6%) for 161 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions, and a passer rating of 50.6.
Despite the dreadful game, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is not worried about the four-time NFL MVP.
“I’m not going to chalk it up to an ‘off’ night, but there are no long-term concerns,” Tomlin said during his weekly Tuesday press conference. “Sunday night was what it was, but I have no long-term reservations about his ability to play the position and play the position at a high level.”
Samuel also ripped DK Metcalf.
“Aaron Rodgers needs that wide receiver that can get open instantly. He doesn’t have that,” Samuel said. “This is a big adjustment for him because he always had that wide receiver that he could depend on. DK Metcalf, he’s just too slow. He doesn’t get going fast enough, and that isn’t going to be (sufficient) enough for Aaron Rodgers.”
In regard to his son, Samuel said son is full healthy now after having neck surgery this offseason and is in a “good situation” with the Steelers.
Asante Samuel Jr. said he the healthiest he’s ever been.
“Just been running a little bit more on the track. I was on the track a lot, getting the wind, making sure I’m doing long-distance running, running up the hills and stuff like that. Just making sure I’m in shape. And lifting a little bit heavier than I usually do. Things of that nature,” Samuel said.
Samuel is thrilled to be in the Black and Gold. He’s chomping at the bit to put his hand in the pile.
“I’m glad I ended up here,” Samuel said after Wednesday’s practice. “I’m glad everything worked out to be here, and I’m blessed to be here with great coaches and great teammates.”
“… [Practicing] meant the world to me. Just being out there, putting on a helmet, putting on cleats, going at it, competing with other guys that’s trying to accomplish the same goal as me and just trying to win. At the end of the day, it’s about winning, and I know that’s all it’s about over here, winning. It’s a winning culture, and I wanted to be a part of that.”
