Brian Schottenheimer says personnel changes may take place on special teams

If you haven’t been paying attention to how much of a hit the Dallas Cowboys special teams unit has taken this year, maybe you should.

When John Fassel left to take the job with the Tennessee Titans, many thought it might be an easy fix, wrong.

With how brutal the Cowboys special teams play has been this year, Brian Schottenheimer said today on 103 The Fan that personnel changes may be on the way.

The current special teams coordinator is Nick Sorensen.

Major Issues

Outside of Brandon Aubrey, who is just the best kicker in football, the rest of the special teams have been a disaster this year.

If you watched the game last Thursday night, the average starting field position for Detroit was the 41-yard line. Dallas was on 28.

KaVontae Turpin was once again penalized for an illegal fair catch, something that he did the week prior.

In the first quarter when he raised his hands slightly. After fielding the ball, he ran a few yards only to stop after the whistle.

The penalty pushed the Cowboys to their own five.

Turpin was penalized for the same infraction in a victory over the Eagles on Nov. 23.

Not only that, Tom Kennedy, the punt returner for the Lions, had three returns for 120 yards. Read that again. That is 40 yards per return!

Yes, the defense was awful, and when it was a three-point game with nine minutes to play in the 4th quater, the Lions offense scored on five offensive plays.

That is just as bad as the special teams setting them up nearly at the 50-yard line.

I am not sure what the change will be, but it clearly sounds like personnel changes will be maybe either removing Sorensen from his current role as the coordinator to something else and allowing someone else to take the duties.

It always seems like this team does these types of things one week to late.

Yes, they beat the Eagles and Chiefs, but this has been a problem for over a month, and because they lost to the Lions and it played a major issue, now they want to make changes.

This team has to win out and get a lot of help now that they lost to the Lions.

Winning the NFC East will probably be the only way they get in and if the Eagles find their way again and win tonight, you can kiss that all but goodbye.
