Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is currently navigating his first season with North Carolina; however, there remains a possibility that he could return to the NFL next season.
The New York Giants parted ways with head coach Brian Daboll on Monday, and Belichick’s name surfaced as a potential candidate.
Belichick is trying to get his Tar Heels ready to play Wake Forest this week, but reporters asked the 73-year-old head coach about coaching the Giants.
“Getting ready for Wake Forest, that’s all I got this week,” Belichick said on Tuesday, via New York Post’s Justin Tasch. “I’ve been asked about (an NFL return) from time to time. Look, I’ve been down this road before. I’m focused on Wake Forest, that’s it. That’s my commitment to this team. Next week it’ll be to our next opponent and so forth. I’m here to do the best I can for this team.”
Belichick hasn’t coached in the NFL since New England fired him in 2023, but the Giants could be a landing spot.
New York needs a veteran head coach who can collaborate with its core of young players. Belichick brings significant experience, having previously served as the Giants’ defensive coordinator from 1985 to 1990 under head coach Bill Parcells.
Belichick is probably eager to get back into the role of NFL head coach, as he stands just 15 wins away from surpassing Don Shula as the most successful head coach in league history.
